Prevention in a Glass

Making smoothies are fun, however there are several things to consider:

  • Numer One: Is the smoothie used to improve health? For example, if the smoothie consists of vanilla ice cream instead of unsweetened yogurt you have to count the caloric value of the smoothie because you'll end of gaining weight and losing the nutritional value.

  • Number Two: The sugar content of the smoothie should be considered to maintain healthy glucose levels. If a person is diabetic then you need to include fruits which are lower in carbohydrates such as strawberries, blackberries and raspberries. If the smoothie is mainly fruit it could lead to weight gain, so the smoothie must be balanced with vegetables such as cucumbers, spinach, carrots etc.

  • Number Three: Is there a difference between fruit smoothie and a green smoothie? You bet there is! A green smoothie made with kale, beets, broccoli and cruciferous vegetables will provide a higher value of fiber and antioxidants.
